We had a full house on March 9th – our first day back after a 2-month hiatus. The new appointment scheduling worked well, with everybody arriving as arranged. Some families came from as far away as Oak Harbor and Stanwood. Chris and Rebecca set up registration in the Whatcom Humane Society's Baker Creek location parking lot. In our first 2 days back, 17 dogs and 31 kitties would have surgery on the Spay Station. Potentially, the 16 female cats (all in
heat) who were spayed could have had 3 litters during this year's “kitten season” with an average of 6 kittens per litter – that equals 288 kittens!!!!!

Chris welcomed new Veterinary Assistant, Jessica, while Princess waited in her carrier. She is a 6-month girl whose family has had her since she was 2 months old. Princess was a gift from her owner’s sister and the family found out about the Spay Station on Craigslist.

Meanwhile, buff-colored Strife waited with his owner. He is 6 months old. He has cute dark markings on the top of his head. Mugsy, a year-old tuxedo, was rescued from under his owner’s porch. His kitty mom was a feral kitty who had had her kittens there. His owner saw the Spay Station when it was in the Ferndale WFC parking lot.

Bubbles waited in his carrier. He got his name while his family still thought he was a she. He was a gift from a sister-in-law. Bubble's owner saw the Spay Station at Toad’s Express Mart in Birch Bay. Meanwhile, Fluffy aka Fluffalicious, buried her face in a towel in the hope that she couldn’t be seen. She is a 2˝ year-old whose kitty mom, Nova, also had surgery on the Spay Station last spring at Baker Creek. Her owner also saw the Spay Station at Toad’s in Birch Bay.

Tiger, an 8-month-old tabby, waited with his owner Wednesday during the windy, rainy morning. The family dog, Sausages – a husky/shepherd mix -- was neutered when the Spay Station was at Baker Creek last year. Ginger also waited for boarding to begin with her owner. She is a gift/rescue kitty who is 1 ˝ years old. Her owner saw an ad about the Spay Station on Craigslist and also got information from WHS.

Vet Tech, Kathryn, went over registration forms with Turbo and Rubic’s Cube’s parents. The Dachshund pups looked like they were checking out the information too. Their doggie mom lives next door, whose owner told Turbo and Rubic’s Cube's owners about the Spay Station.

Sweet Roo waited patiently in line. A 2-3 year-old smooth-coat Border Collie, she was rescued from a brutal situation in Oak Harbor. Her family has other animals who had surgery when the Spay Station was in Mt. Vernon. They drove up today to Bellingham for Roo’s surgery as the Spay Station is no longer financially capable of hiring drivers nor affording the gas to drive to previous locations. Roo is in her 04th and final home – she now has a family who love her. Chico, the Chihuahua, is being picked on by other dogs and the family is trying to find him a new home. They thought he would have a better chance at finding a new “forever home” if he was neutered – we all wish him luck!!!!

100 lb. Shamus, a 2-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier, was boarded after the” boss of his house”,Roxie, was taken on first. Roxie is a 2 ˝ year-old Rat Terrier/Min Pin mix who bosses the sweet big guy
around. Shamus’ dog dad was rescued from a brutal situation in Los Angeles. While visiting friends with his owners, the dad dog Smokey jumped over the back fence. The result was a litter of 9 puppies next door, including Shamus.

Kathryn met Shamus before he willingly climbed up the stairs. The weather got even more rainy and cold as the kitty families lined up for their boarding.

The last kitty to board peeked out from a pillow case. After boarding was completed, Rebecca, Chris, Cindy, and Kathryn discussed how the first morning back had gone.

Dr. Karen Mueller began physical examinations in preparation for the 24 scheduled surgeries to begin.

At the end of the day, Sunny and her Dad waited for her kitty, Strife, while a little boy waited for his kitty,Tiger.

Kathryn gave general instructions to the families returning for the 4:30 afternoon discharge.

Jessica gave individual medical instructions to a client. The black and white kitty who was the last to board in the morning went home inside his pillow case, this time choosing to keep his face hidden with just his tail showing.

Rubic’s
Cube, Turbo, and Chico were very glad to see their owners and looked forward to going home to lots of soft pats and a bit of dinner.

Strife was unloaded into his family's waiting arms. Kendall gave specific instructions while Sunny looked on.

Many thanks to the Whatcom Humane Society for the use of their parking lot at the Baker Creek shelter. We are very happy to be back "on the road" in Bellingham, continuing to do what we do and helping to reduce euthanasia associated with the overpopulation of Washington's companion animals.
