Mount Vernon Community Information Website

The Mount Vernon area has been home to native peoples for millennia. Members of the Upper Skagit Tribe, comprised of 11 bands of Native Americans, traditionally occupied lands between Mount Vernon and Newhalem. Three additional tribes – Swinomish, Samish, and Sauk-Suiattle – living in the area now known as Skagit County were signatories to the 1855 Point Elliot Treaty. The treaty gave Western Washington tribes the right to self-governance and set aside several reservations. Members of the remaining three tribes were forced to move onto the Lummi, Tulalip, or Swinomish reservations.

Bill Bailey, local photographer, WHS kitty foster Dad, and great friend to animal rescue organizations was at the Mt. Vernon WalMart on July 31st.  He filmed the celebration of WeSNIP’s 2,000th surgery.  His film can be seen on PETWATCH TV, CHANNEL 26 (COMCAST) which airs three times a day, everyday at 9am, 3pm and 6:30pm.  PetWatch is also available throughout Western Washington on Comcast On Demand and on local channel BTV10 - weekly air times are 8am Thursday, Saturday & Sunday, 4pm Monday thru Saturday and 7:30pm Fridays.

Chrystal arrived early to begin registration.  There was a line up of clients waiting and the schedule was filled quickly.  Legionite, the 4 month-old Lab/Retriever mix played with Rocky, the year-old Shepherd mix.  Both lucky dogs were rescued as strays.  Legionite’s family saw the Spay Station in the WalMart parking lot and Rocky’s family heard about the Station from a friend.

Daisy, the adorable 8 month-old Cockapoo (Cocker Spaniel and Poodle mix) posed for the camera.  She was rescued and her Mom heard about the Spay Station by word of mouth.  Abby was held by her Mom’s neighbor. Abby was a gift from her Mom’s nurse following a 4 month hospital stay.  The nurse is associated with Purrfect Pals.  See their wonderful story at the following website: http://www.purrfectpals.org/About/History.asp

A special thank-you goes to the Alternative Humane Society for their help in reaching this important milestone. AHS has issued many, many “vouchers” to people who need financial aid with spaying and neutering their animals.  These cats and dogs would be giving birth to unwanted kittens and puppies that would add to the overpopulation in Whatcom and Skagit counties.  Read about their wonderful organization at the following website:
