The hills behind Nugent's Corner with dotted with gold.

Bunny and David began registration in the chilly, dark morning.

Zara arrived with the Spay Station and Bessie took her customary place on board.

Tucker, the 5 month-old King Charles Cavelier/Chihuahua mix (Chilier)* waited in the car, took his place in line, and snuggled in Kathryn's arms at boarding time. He looks more like a Spaniel, but the other puppies in his litter looked more like Chihuahuas. Her mom got him at a local breeder and saw the information about the Spay Station on a flyer at Kendall Elementary School.

Tug, who is thought to be a mix of Malamute and perhaps wolf because of his beautiful golden eyes is 7 months old and his family found him on Craigslist. He waited patiently in the car while his Mom registered him, and then tussled with Grim.

Kat and David discussed the schedule, and then she and Zara began boarding the dogs.

Tug waited in line with his Mom while Kat checked him in.  He balked before climbing on the Station.

Grim is a 7 month-old brindle Pitbull/Jindo mix (Korean Jindo Dog is a breed of hunting dog known to have originated on Jindo Island in South Korea. Although relatively unknown outside Korea , it is celebrated in its native land for its fierce loyalty and brave nature).

He waited in line with his Mom. She read about the Spay Station on Craigslist.

Kat made friends with Banjo, a year-old Border Collie.  David encouraged her and finally had to carry her on board.  Her Mom works at the gas station part of the Nugent’s Corner Dodson IGA.

Kitties waited to board, including a mom and her 3 kittens.

Kitty families waited in line while Kat began boarding the carriers.

Kathryn and Kat boarded the kitties.

Bunny and David helped board the last kitties – then, the exams and surgeries began.

Chris, Ashley, and Terry smiled from the Station as Patricia arrived with her morning latte. Yea, the Station awning was fixed.

Zara added a festive touch to the Station. Kat and Bessie showed off their Halloween bandanas. Chris posed with pumpkins filled with kitty, dog, and human Halloween treats.

Thoreau, Sunny, and Bessie showed off their bandanas. Halloween bandanas were put on all the dogs as they were discharged.

Many thanks go to volunteers Bunny, David, Chris and Terry for their early morning registration. Thanks also to Dodson’s IGA for the use of their parking lot on the 28th and to Big Lots for the use of their parking lot on the 30th.

*The Chilier is created by crossing the purebred Chihuahua with the purebred Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. It is considered a hybrid dog, meaning it is not purebred, however the lineage is known whereas the term mutt is used when a dog has an unknown lineage.

Some claim hybrid dogs are healthier because you are mixing up the gene pool. Many breeders of hybrids believe in what is called the heterosis effect and hybrid vigor. Vigor means, Physical or mental strength, force or energy." Others disagree, claiming you are still crossing two first-generation dogs. If you breed two dogs carrying the same genetic defect, the defect will be dominant in the dog.

Regardless of size or lineage, all dogs are mammals, commonly referred to as canines and closely related to the grey wolf. Dogs have instincts, which we as humans have a responsibility to fulfill.

One of these instincts is to migrate. To fulfill this instinct in our dog, we need to take them for a daily walk.
